The power of kindness
While bicycling through the neighborhood the other day
I chanced on an elderly man standing in front of a tiny home and shouting at a beggar who probably was sitting at the door
None intervened, hence out of empathy for the beggar, i stopped near him and offered to walk him to a nearby tea shop and buy him a cup of tea and some snacks
There appeared a thin ray of smile on his face and we drank the tea together and parted our ways without any conversations in between us
I specifically didn't wish to stir his past memories and make him uncomfortable for he already was in a world of his own
As I was cycling back home, there was this huge bungalow in front of which stood a group of beggars awaiting their turn to enter the bungalow
Curiosity parked my bicycle and made me observe the happenings from a distance
The security was permitting one by one to enter to receive a parcel and exit
A good 30 minutes later, once the scene in front of the bungalow returned to normalcy, I approached the security and politely enquired about the happening
He said that it's a daily scene as the residents of the bungalow feed the poor prior to eating their lunch
Now I don't know what to say except that
"Compassionate gestures don't relate to the wealthy status but to the state of mind"
Sometimes all that a beggar may need is just a few kind words 🌿
